  8. GENERAL INFORMATION  : Many service people have called insisting that their is
  9. a bug in how the rights work for files under NetWare 386. The typical scenario
  10. goes like this:

  12. I have a user that only has read and file scan rights in a directory but
  13. has all rights to a given file in that directory. When attempting to make
  14. changes to that file, he gets errors indicating that he does not have
  15. enough rights. Whats wrong?

  17. Everytime this has been reported to me, the user is attempting to modify
  18. the file with an editor. I have never seen an editor that does not create a
  19. temporary work file. The failure coming back is an attempt to create the
  20. temporary file. As the user lacks that rights to create in the directory,
  21. this is why it fails.

  23. If you wish to prove to yourself that it works, try appending to the file.
  24. This can be done doing a "dir >> <filename>. After completing this
  25. operation, you will see that the size and date have been changed meaning
  26. that a modification has occured.
